A missed GLP-1 dose: finding the right instructions

You open the calendar and realize your usual medication time has passed. Before deciding to take it now or wait, identify the exact product and how much time has gone by. GLP-1 medicines don’t all share the same missed-dose instructions.

Find the instructions for your exact prescription

Use the label and patient instructions supplied with your medication. Check the name, formulation, and prescribed schedule. A daily tablet, weekly pen, and pharmacy-prepared vial should not be treated as interchangeable.

If the instructions are missing or unclear, contact your pharmacist or prescriber. Avoid relying on a search result that may describe a different product.

    Have these details ready

    • The exact medicine and current prescribed dose.
    • The date and time of the last dose you definitely took.
    • When the missed dose was due.
    • Whether you missed more than one dose.
    • Any symptoms, recent treatment changes, or uncertainty about an accidental extra dose.

If you can’t remember whether you took it, say that rather than choosing a date that seems likely. The uncertainty is part of what your care team needs to know.

Ask for a clear next step

Confirm what to do now and when the following dose should happen. Don’t double up to compensate or shorten the interval without specific guidance. After a longer interruption, ask whether the previous plan still applies before restarting.

Write the answer down in one place. If a pharmacist and prescriber give instructions that seem different, ask them to clarify the plan together rather than combining pieces of both.

    Make the next reminder useful

A reminder works better when it includes a way to record completion. A calendar check mark or private note can distinguish “the alert appeared” from “I took the medicine.” Keep the record simple enough that you’ll actually use it.

If cost, travel, side effects, or supply problems caused the missed dose, tell your care team. Those obstacles deserve a practical solution, and a louder phone alarm may not help.

If you think you took too much, or have severe symptoms such as persistent vomiting, severe abdominal pain, or fainting, seek prompt medical advice. Keep the medication packaging available so the product can be identified accurately.
