Whether pregnancy is a near-term goal or simply a possibility, it belongs in the conversation about GLP-1 treatment. The right plan depends on your medicine, other health needs, and the contraception you use.
Bring the pregnancy plan into the treatment plan
Tell your prescriber if you’re trying to conceive, thinking about it in the coming months, or could become pregnant. Don’t wait until the week you intend to stop contraception. Some medicines remain in the body for a while after the last dose.
For weight management, Wegovy instructions call for stopping semaglutide at least two months before a planned pregnancy. Your clinician should coordinate the timing and any other treatment you need. Don’t assume the same interval applies to every product.
Ask specifically about oral contraception
Tirzepatide can reduce the effectiveness of oral hormonal contraceptives. Its instructions advise a non-oral method or adding a barrier method for four weeks after starting and for four weeks after each dose increase.
Discuss this with your prescriber or pharmacist before the relevant change. Ask which option fits your situation and how vomiting or diarrhea might affect your usual contraception instructions. A general weight-loss plan should not leave these details unclear.
Know who to contact if plans change
If you become pregnant while taking a weight-loss GLP-1, stop the weight-loss medicine and contact your prescriber promptly for guidance. If the medicine is also part of diabetes care, explain that so your blood-sugar treatment can be coordinated. Don’t try to work out a replacement plan alone.
Also discuss breastfeeding before starting or resuming treatment. Instructions differ by product and formulation, so a friend’s experience may not apply.
Leave the visit with written answers
Useful questions include: when should the medication stop, what contraception is needed, who coordinates care, and what follow-up should happen before treatment is reconsidered? Keep the answers with your current medication list.
This conversation doesn’t require you to have your whole future decided. Sharing what you know now gives your care team the chance to make a plan that fits your life and to update it when things change.
