Moving to a new city while taking a GLP-1: keeping care on track

Moving to a new city while taking a GLP-1: keeping care on track

Your moving checklist probably includes a truck, utility accounts and a growing stack of boxes. Somewhere between those tasks, it helps to make a small plan for your GLP-1 care too. A move is easier to navigate when you know who to contact before you need an answer.

Ask your current care team how follow-up and prescriptions will work after you move. Keep their answers with the rest of your moving information so you can find them when you need them.

Make the first call before the boxes are packed

Tell your prescriber your expected move date and destination. Ask whether your existing follow-up arrangements will still be available and, if not, what you should arrange next. The answer depends on your care setup and location.

Ask your pharmacy how a move could affect filling or receiving your particular medication. Confirm the contact details for both the current and intended pharmacy, if a change is needed. Don't assume a prescription or delivery arrangement will move automatically just because you updated an address on one account.

If you don't yet know where you'll receive care, ask your current team for help identifying your next steps. A local health center may also be a starting point for asking about services, although each center's options can differ.

Keep the information that makes a handoff easier

Make a short, private list of your current medicine name, formulation, instructions, pharmacy and care-team contacts. Include other medicines and relevant allergies. Keep the actual prescription label and supplied instructions with the product.

You can also ask how to obtain a copy of the treatment plan and any records your next care team may need. Find out the process early; it may take a little coordination. If someone offers a written summary, check that it matches the current plan rather than an older version.

Keep personal health information somewhere secure that you can reach during the move. A phone note, printed sheet in a closed folder, or another method may work. Choose what is practical for your circumstances.

    Plan the medication's trip separately

Don't put needed medication into a box that could be delayed, left in a hot vehicle or exposed to freezing temperatures. Check the storage instructions for your exact product, and ask the pharmacy how to manage the journey if you aren't sure.

Think through each part of the trip: leaving your current home, time in transit, arrival and access to the right storage. A cooler is not automatically suitable; some medicines must be protected from freezing as well as excess heat.

If the medicine has been outside its permitted conditions, or you're unsure what happened to it, ask the pharmacist before using it. The appearance of a product alone may not answer the question. Our guide to storing and traveling with GLP-1 medication has more questions to bring to that conversation.

Put follow-up on the new calendar

Check when your next appointment or refill request is due and add it alongside the moving reminders. If you'll be between providers, ask who can answer questions in the meantime. A name and contact method are more useful than a vague plan to “sort it out later.”

If a delivery is involved, confirm the destination, a way to receive the package promptly and how you'll be notified. If your new address or timing is uncertain, ask the pharmacy what options it offers rather than guessing.

Moving can change food routines, sleep and time for activity too. Start with one familiar meal or a short walk in the new neighborhood if those are useful to you. A disrupted week doesn't require an elaborate reset.

    Don't improvise a medication schedule

If the move may cause a missed dose or a gap in treatment, contact your prescriber or pharmacist for instructions for your specific medicine. Don't stretch doses, double up or restart an old schedule based on a general article.

Write down the plan you receive and who gave it to you. Once you're settled, you can update the contact list and put the moving checklist away.
