Storing and traveling with GLP-1 medication

Packing a GLP-1 for a trip starts with knowing which storage instructions apply to your exact medicine. Similar-looking pens or vials may have different temperature limits and different rules after first use.

Read the instructions for the exact product

Check the pharmacy label and the instructions supplied with your medicine. Ask about refrigeration, any allowed time outside the refrigerator, protection from light, and the discard date after opening or first use.

Don’t borrow the room-temperature allowance from another brand, device, or formulation. If you use a pharmacy-prepared product, get its storage instructions directly from that pharmacy. Keep a written copy with your supplies.

    Think through the whole journey

Consider the drive, airport or station wait, flight, arrival, and accommodation. Ask the pharmacist what travel container is appropriate and how to avoid both excess heat and freezing. Direct contact with an ice pack can be a problem for a medicine that must not freeze.

Keep needed medication accessible and protected rather than leaving it in a hot vehicle. Check your carrier and destination requirements in advance, including rules for injection supplies and any cooling materials. Requirements can differ between routes and countries.

    Have a plan for uncertainty

If the medicine becomes too warm, freezes, or spends an uncertain amount of time outside its permitted conditions, contact the pharmacist before using it. Give the product name and the best details you have about temperature and duration. Appearance alone may not establish that it is still usable.

Don't change the dose or schedule to compensate for a storage problem. If a dose may be missed, obtain instructions for that specific medicine.

    Pack the practical extras

Bring the supplies your product requires and a safe way to handle used sharps if relevant. Keep the pharmacy and prescriber contact details available, along with your current prescription information.

If travel crosses time zones, ask how the schedule should translate before leaving. Write the agreed plan down rather than making a rushed calculation on the day. A few clear answers beforehand can keep an ordinary travel delay from turning into a medication guessing game.
